Villa de Mazo

Every year between May and June the village of Mazo celebrates Corpus Christi.  This event combines the religious fervour and artistic creativity of the inhabitants.  Its origin comes from an old tradition of the Renaissance era, when the archways, altars and decorated carts were used in the celebrations which took place.  Since 1873 the festival has been characterized by the creation of carpets, passageways and decorated altars, and since 1950, there has been a lot of innovation in the design, construction, styles and subjects.  Indeed, the ingenuity and creativity of the local people produces an inexhaustible fount of artistry which is guaranteed to delight visitors.  As a result, Corpus Christi in Mazo has been declared a Fiesta of National Tourist interest.

Thanks to its great artistic and symbolic value, Corpus in Mazo is a powerful focus of attraction: a feast for the eyes in celebration of the Sacrament of the Eucharist.  The Host is extolled in a myriad of forms: in long, narrow flower carpets, tabernacles, monstrances, crosses, candelabras, banners and vases.  There are animals too: doves and peacocks, swans and seagulls, fishes and lambs.  And there are pictures of St. Blaise (the patron of the village), St Lawrence, and the Virgin of the Snow, who is patron saint of the island and Mayoress in perpetuity. The local people collect petals, seeds and leaves, and use them to to cover their creations which personify the divine image in the form of  passageways, carpets, and kneelers.  This is an extraordinary example of sacred art in the open air, dignifying the steep, cobbled streets with ephemeral creations in honour of the mystery of the Sacrament.
