Los Cristianos

Although nowadays los Cristianos and the Playa de las Americas are together, the former keeps its own personality having been built around an old maritime villa. In its bay there is a nice beach and bustling harbour with ample sailing facilities. Everyday boats depart from the port of los Cristianos to the island of Gomera and el Hierro.

There are also a variety of inexpensive pleasure trips from the quayside. Some come close to watch the colony of Calderon whales that live in the straits between Tenerife and la Gomera.

The resort of Los Cristianos lies in a sheltered bay in the south of the island, approx 30 minutes transfer time from the airport. What most visitors fail to notice is the now dormant volcano overlooking the village.

Originally, Los Cristianos was a small fishing village and much of the old town still retains a Canarian feel. As well as the numerous tourists, many locals still choose to live here, and can often be seen sitting in the square around the old church watching the world go by.

The town has developed into a modern, thriving resort with plentiful shops, cafes and restaurants, but still somehow manages to retain its fishing village origins. The focal point of the resort is the working harbour where small fishing boats weave in and out of the large ferries and jet foils making their regular trips to the nearby island of La Gomera approx 1 hour away. From this harbour numerous other boats cater to the tourist market by offering 2 hour trips to view the whales and dolphins. These trips offer superb value for money compared to those offered by the large tour operators, and you will be almost guaranteed a free child place and the offer of a free trip next day if you don’t see anything.

The crescent shaped bay has a beach over 400 metres long with a wide variety of water sports on offer and even a secluded nudist beach at the far end of the resort!

A wide promenade runs along the full stretch of the resort, continuing for several miles right into the heart of Playa de las Americas. Here you will find many traders selling “genuine” designer T shirts and watches for less than the price of a cup of tea, as well as the highly organised “find the lady” card games. These games are illegal and you WILL loose your money very quickly. The minimum stake is usually around £20. Be warned these people operate in groups of 6 – 8, excluding the lookouts, and the ones people winning will be in on the game. These people will never force you to get involved and you will not feel threatened by their game as long as you ignore them.

At the extreme end of the resort, next to the Arona Gran hotel, a regular market is held every Sunday. As with all markets, use common sense and be prepared to haggle, something the British hate to do.

Nightlife here is not rowdy, although the town does have a couple of discos. Most people tend to relax and watch the world go by from the many restaurants in the square opposite the harbour. It is our opinion the the resort is an ideal place for a family holiday.
